About this blog
I build apps with ChatGPT, Claude, Hermes, and Codex. I also experiment with local AI and the hardware that runs it.
Apps I’m making
Cookly recommends recipes based on ingredients in your fridge. It’s available on the App Store and Google Play. I’m also working on KnitLens, which makes crochet patterns from photos, and Sobok, a personalized story app that prioritizes children’s privacy. Sound Travel explores cities and places around the world through calming soundscapes for rest, bedtime, or a white-noise backdrop. Delsa is a SaaS product in development for organizing and visualizing meaningful changes across GitHub, Notion, and other work tools.
When I get stuck, I try another approach. That’s the kind of thing I want to write about here, along with the AI tools and hardware I use while building apps.
Building on an 8GB iMac
My current machine is an M1 iMac with 8GB of memory and a 256GB SSD. Running development tools and simulators has left me short on memory and storage, and interrupted my work. I’ve also had to clear caches and files by hand.
I tried a local LLM too, but gave up on using it as a daily development tool on this machine. I ordered a Mac Studio M5 Max with 128GB of memory and a 1TB SSD. It hasn’t arrived yet.
What I want to try next
I want to try a local LLM again and see if I can run it alongside app development. I’m curious how to divide work between local models and cloud AI. I’d also like to experiment with personal agents and multimodal tools.
Some experiments will solve problems from app development; others will start with simple curiosity. I’ll include the failed attempts and open questions too. If I compare performance, I’ll include the conditions and measurements.
What I know, and what I’m guessing
Experiencing interruptions and knowing their cause are two different things. I use these labels to keep them separate.
- Measured
- A measurement with its conditions and source evidence.
- Observed
- Something I experienced or confirmed. It doesn’t prove the cause.
- Inferred
- An interpretation based on evidence; other explanations may exist.
- Planned
- Work or experiments I intend to do.
- Unverified
- A claim or cause I haven’t confirmed yet.
